Common questions

Do nonprofits need a 501(c)(3) to send texts?

No. An EIN and a website are enough to register a business texting number. 501(c)(3) status lets you use the charity use case and usually unlocks nonprofit pricing.

Is there free texting for nonprofits?

Very rarely for real volume: carriers charge fees on every business text, so services charge per message. Many, including MyCleanText, offer nonprofit discounts; ours is 20% off every text for 501(c)(3)s (never below 1.55¢ a text), with replies free.

How long does it take to start texting?

Usually a few days to about three weeks, because carriers review each organization and campaign. A complete sign-up page and good sample messages are the fastest way through.

Can we text donors and volunteers who never signed up for texts?

No. You need each person’s permission to text them, and texting cannot be a condition of donating or volunteering. Add a clear, optional opt-in to your forms and events instead.

Which number type is best for a nonprofit?

A local 10DLC number for most organizations. Toll-free for steady support-style traffic, and a short code only for very large lists or text-to-give.

Can we include a donation link in our texts?

Yes, if links to your own website were part of the messages you registered. Use your full domain rather than a link shortener, which carriers often filter.
